Verizon just announced new plans that will provide at least 30% more data, but it’s going to cost you!

Verizon raises prices, introduces new data plans

The new plans, which increase prices $5 to $10 a month, are designed to reflect the increase in data use, Verizon said.

In April 2013, an average Verizon smartphone customer used about 1 GB of data per month. By April 2016, the average increased to 2.7 GB per month.

The new plan choices:

  • Small: Now $35/month for 2 GB (was $30/month for 1GB)
  • Medium: Now $50/month for 4 GB (was $45/month for 3GB)
  • Large: Now $70/month for 8 GB (was $60/month for 6GB)
  • X-Large: Now $90/month for 16 GB (was $80/month for 12GB)
  • XX-Large: Now $110/month for 24 GB (was $100/month for 18GB)

Each plan includes unlimited talk and text, but every smartphone line is an additional $20 per month and tablets are $10 per month. So your monthly bill includes these charges plus the cost of your data plan.

In addition to at least 30% more data, Verizon is introducing carryover data. You can now keep your unused data for another month. It will expire at the end of the next monthly bill cycle.

And as part of the new My Verizon app, the carrier says it will offer a ‘safety mode’ feature to prevent those costly overages:

Switch on Safety Mode within your new My Verizon app, and once you’ve hit your data limit we’ll move your data from 4G LTE to 128 kbps speeds – and you won’t pay anything for that data you use over your plan size. The slower speeds in Safety Mode apply to all your data usage until you upgrade your plan, buy more data through Data Boost, or until the end of the month, when you start over with your new allotment of 4G LTE data.

For customers on the XL or XXL data size, Safety Mode is free. It’ll cost $5 a month (optional) for everyone else.

Verizon says customers will be able to switch between data sizes whenever they want using the new My Verizon app, and there will be no penalties.

Existing customers can keep their old plan if they want to, CNET reported.

With these moves, Verizon is adding features that some other carriers have already introduced. But Verizon says it has the better network – “America’s most reliable.’
