A daily milkshake could be the key to weight loss

A new study in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that a mid-morning milkshake between breakfast and lunch can help keep you fuller for longer and reduce your overall daily caloric intake.

Researchers tracked 15 healthy men who drank shakes that were 50% carbohydrates, 20% protein, and 30% fat and ranged between 100 and 500 calories. What they found was the sweet spot was a milkshake that’s very thick yet low in calories would keep participants fuller for longer.

The viscosity of the shake was determined to be extremely important and further confirm how sugary soft drinks can sabotage your diet.

‘These results underscore the lack of the satiating efficiency of empty calories in quickly ingested drinks such as sodas,’ the study’s authors wrote. ‘The increase in perceived fullness that is due solely to the increased viscosity, which is a phenomenon that we refer to as phantom fullness, may be useful in lowering energy intake.’

So you can feel good about indulging in rich and creamy milkshake as part of a healthy weight loss program!

While we’re on the topic of dairy…

There are a lot of people crying over skimmed milk, apparently! That’s because a new study suggests people who consume full-fat dairy weigh less and are less likely to develop diabetes than those who eat low-fat dairy products.

Whole fat may work to regulate insulin and glucose. The more fatty dairy products one consumes at once, the longer they’ll go without getting hungry enough to want more calories from sugary foods or foods with lots of carbohydrates, which the body converts into sugar then fat.

Milk can actually save you money on teeth whitening when mixed with this hot beverage!

It’s entirely possible to pay upwards of $7 or more for a tube of whitening toothpaste, but there are a host of other ways to get a brighter smile on the cheap.

For all you tea drinkers out there — and let’s face it, tea is the second most consumed beverage after water — a dash of milk in your cup will reportedly do wonders for your teeth.

The reality is that dark tannins in tea, which add bitterness to the drink, will also stain your teeth. But when milk is added, the casein protein in milk bonds with the tannins to create a chemical barrier against normal tooth discoloration.

This conclusion was reached by Dr. Ava Chow of the University of Alberta’s School of Dentistry and a team of researchers who took extracted human teeth and left them in solutions of tea either with or without milk. Then they checked the color of the teeth after 24 hours.

The result? The teeth that steeped in the dairy-laced tea were noticeably whiter.

The whitening effect was so stark that Dr. Chow noted in the Journal of Dental Hygiene, ‘The magnitude of the colour change observed in our experiments is comparable to the colour change seen by vital bleaching products and more effective than whitening toothpastes.’

Not a fan of milk in your tea? These five common household items can also whiten your smile for very little money.
