Sabra recalls hummus over listeria concerns

Sabra is recalling its popular hummus due to concerns over Listeria monocytogenes, the Food and Drug Administration has announced.

“Sabra Dipping Company is voluntarily recalling a majority of its hummus due to possible contamination with Listeria which was identified at the manufacturing site but not identified in product distributed to retailers,” the company said on its website. “Our first concern is always the health and safety of the people who enjoy our products, so out of an abundance of caution we have issued this recall.”

Any product with a “Best Before” date up to and including January 23, 2017 should be thrown away. The “Best Before” date and product code can be found on the lid of each package. All of the hummus products affected by the recall were made before November 8, 2016.

No other Sabra products are part of the recall, including Sabra Organic Hummus, Sabra Salsa, Sabra Guacamole and Sabra Greek Yogurt Dips.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems, the FDA said. Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms. However, listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
