Cheesecake is a dessert favorite for many. Historians believe that cheesecake originated in ancient Greece. The earliest known recipes for cheesecake are found in Cato the Elder’s book De Agri Cultura and were made for religious purposes.
Much later in 1872, a man named William Lawrence was looking for a way to recreate soft French Neufchâtel cheese and stumbled upon what became known as ‘cream cheese’ — an essential ingredient in today’s modern cheesecake.
