The eatery in Bangor, Maine – one of only two currently operating – is planning to shut down next month after 50 years in business, according to the Bangor Daily News. The hotel will remain open.
That will leave only the Howard Johnson restaurant location in Lake George, New York.
A nostalgic look back
The Associated Press reports that there were once more than 800 of the orange-roofed eateries that were known for comfort food – things like fried clam strips and 28 flavors of ice cream.
Howard Deering Johnson started the business in 1925, after he inherited a soda fountain.
Owners of the soon-to-be-closed Bangor location told their local newspaper that business has slowed down lately, with nearby hotels offering free breakfast.
Restaurant recession?
In fact, the closing comes as there are new fears of a nationwide “restaurant recession.”
Ruby Tuesday recently announced plans to close 95 underperforming restaurants, and MarketWatch reports other chains are dealing with rising costs and slowed growth.
Clark has said fewer people are eating out because the price of groceries is going down.
What it means for you
In the coming months, you can expect to see more promotions from chain restaurants, such as this new one from Olive Garden, which was featured on Clark Deals.
For just $12.99, you can buy one entree and take another one home with you.
