Two retailers dominate when it comes to low prices

There’s an organization called Kantar Retail that monitors the price of a basket of goods across retail.

As part of its Opening Price Point (OPP) Study, Kantar took a look at retailers like Save-A-Lot, Aldi, Dollar General, Stop & Shop, Walmart and Family Dollar across three types of purchase categories: food, non-food and toiletries.

The big winner for delivering the lowest prices? There were two actually. Dollar General and Walmart.

When it came to food, Dollar General was 99 cents cheaper than Walmart on 11 staple purchases. But Walmart bested the General by 76 cents when it came to a non-edible basket.

One surprise result: If you’re buying any toiletries or OTC medications, skip both Walmart and Dollar General and go straight to Family Dollar.

You can fill your basket at Family Dollar for a minimum of $1.27 less than you’ll pay than the other guys. In fact, Family Dollar will save you $8.78 in this category versus Aldi!
