The General is coming to a state near you…and he’s going to save you big bucks!

The Feb. 11 announcement about Dollar General expanding to North Dakota means the discount retailer now has a presence in 44 states.

‘This is an important milestone for Dollar General as we expand into our 44th state and build our presence in the upper Midwest,’ Todd Vasos, Dollar General’s chief executive officer said. ‘We look forward to serving additional communities with value and convenience as we grow our footprint throughout the state and welcoming new North Dakotan employees to the Dollar General family.’

With more than 13,200 stores across the country, the only states Dollar General is not in are Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Washington and Wyoming.

Dollar General dominates the food category with low prices

While not a true dollar store, Dollar General prices about 25% of its products at $1 or less and 80% of its items at $5 or less.

The fact that 44 states now have a Dollar General means that residents of those states can turbo-charge their savings every time they shop — particularly when it comes to shopping for food staples.

Dollar General was named as one of the two cheapest stores in America according to Kantar Retail, a group that monitors the price of a basket of goods across retail.

As part of its Opening Price Point (OPP) Study, Kantar took a look at retailers like Save-A-Lot, Aldi, Dollar General, Stop & Shop, Walmart and Family Dollar across three types of purchase categories: Food, non-food and toiletries.

When it came to food, Dollar General was 99 cents cheaper than Walmart on 11 staple purchases.

But Walmart bested the General by 76 cents when it came to a non-edible basket.

One surprise result: If you’re buying any toiletries or OTC medications, skip both Walmart and Dollar General and go straight to Family Dollar.

You can fill your basket at Family Dollar for a minimum of $1.27 less than you’ll pay than the other guys. In fact, Family Dollar will save you $8.78 in this category versus Aldi!
