Capital One to start caller ID spoofing, visiting debtors in pers

Capital One has some new terms of service (TOS) that are making a lot of customers do a double-take.

Do you know what caller ID spoofing is? It’s a big problem with fraud rings. It’s where the phone rings and the caller ID says it’s from your bank, or the hospital, or wherever, so you answer thinking it’s a legit call. But it’s not; the crooks can make that caller ID say anything.

Wouldn’t it alarm you if your bank said in its TOS that it could use spoofing to try to get you on phone? That is one of the unsavory incredible things in Capital One’s new TOS, according to The Los Angeles Times.

“We may modify or suppress caller ID and similar services and identify ourselves on these services in any manner we choose,” the TOS reads.

Imagine a bill collector you’re trying to avoid dialing you up and their number coming up with a neighbor’s name or a relative’s name…you answer and they’ve got you on the phone! This is such a problem in the criminal world. Now a bank is actually taking a play from the crooks’ playbook!

But wait there’s more…

The Los Angeles Times reports Capital One can also visit you at your home or job under their new TOS: “We may contact you in any manner we choose,” even a “personal visit.”

The best part was when a Capital One media spokeswoman stated, “Capital One does not visit our cardholders, nor do we send debt collectors to their homes or work,” she said on one hand when asked about the new TOS…

Unless it has to do with defaulted bills over jet skis and snowmobiles! “As a last resort, we may go to a customer’s home after appropriate notification if it becomes necessary to repossess [a] sports vehicle,” the spokeswoman then pronounced.

Now Capital One says they’re reevaluating their whole TOS…but that was several days ago and silence is deadly.
