According to an Apple support page, only a “very small number” of iPhone 6s devices manufactured between September and October 2015 may unexpectedly shut down. However, Apple stresses that there’s no safety issue with the phones.

If you’ve had this problem with your iPhone 6s, go to an Apple Retail Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to have your device’s serial number checked. Do not take your phone to your wireless provider.

If your phone is eligible for the program, you’ll receive a free battery replacement. And if you replaced the battery on your own due to this defect, contact Apple about a refund.

Before you get your battery replaced, Apple says you need to complete the following steps:

  • Back up your data to iTunes or iCloud.
  • Turn off Find my iPhone
  • Erase data and settings in Settings > General > Reset > Erase all Content and Settings

If your iPhone has any damage that may affect the replacement of the battery, such as a cracked screen, you’ll need to fix that before Apple will replace the battery.
