Market research firm IRI took a close look at store brand sales from supermarkets, drugstores, mass market retailers, military commissaries and select club and dollar retail chains. What they found was that the undisputable #1 most popular store brand item is bottled water.
Convenience/PET still bottled water – which includes both flavored and unflavored sparkling bottled water in addition to regular bottled water – did a whopping $2.1 billion in sales for the 52 weeks ended June 12, 2016.
The second most popular product category was frozen fruit. Store brands did nearly $724 million in business in that category.
However, the most explosive year-over-year growth was seen in the refrigerated peppers/pimentos/olives (164% increase) market and for cookie/cookie bar mixes (up 156%).
